iHarmonix Platinum i-Series headphones w Mic
For most any sound product with a 3.5 mm audio jack
I see more headsets, headphones, earbuds, and the like than most people do in their
lifetime. They range from $2.99 drugstore specials to $300.00 audiophile products
that not only give you super sound but also block the noise of babies crying on
planes. The iHarmonix Platinum i-Series headphones are at the lower end of that
range but not too low. The PR states: “High Fidelity Stereo Earphones for any mobile
music device equipped with a 3.5mm jack including iPhone, iPhone 3G, and BlackBerry™.”
After running tests with a Blackberry Storm, Sansa Clip, iPod Nano, and several
other 3.5mm equipped products I tend to agree with that statement. At this time Apple
and AT&T have not seen fit to provide me with a test iPhone so I was unable to check
that. The iHarmonix Platinum i-Series headphones list at $59.95. You can exchange the
in-line microphone for a volume control at the same price point if you get the Platinium
EV-Platinum Series version or forgo either function to purchase the Platinium E-series
version for $10.00 less. iHarmonix also has other headphones that might fit your needs
and budget.

The unit is well made and looks very serious to others. By that I mean they know you are not a drugstore buyer or someone who just uses the earbuds included with whatever product you are using. The some-parts-shiny-and-others-just-brushed-metal look is different. The inclusion of three sets of soft ear gels is good. I tend to be on the big ear side so needed the larger version. That choice made, I connected the headset to my Sansa Clip and heard some fine sound. Bass seemed a little off to me but not so much that it is an issue. The ear gels did lower outside noise quite a bit. I listened to symphonic, country, rock, and parts of an audio book from Audible.com. I duplicated the same tests with the sound from the Lenovo ThinkPad R400, my iPod (that was not free from Apple either), and a Sansa Fuze. Results were fine with all of these. I did feel the ear pieces were a little heavy but my big ears could handle that.
The price is right and the product performs well. If you are looking for something that deadens external sounds and/or give you concert hall performance you will need to have deeper pockets and go up the price scale. If you want reliable sound in a well built and reasonably priced product the Platinum i-Series will do a fine job.
